John takes Bernard and Lenina to a little house outside of the village. They meet his mother Linda and Bernard realizes that she's the girl that the director is talking about. He decides to stay outside with John and talk to him for a while. Linda explains to Lenina about how life was tough on her living in the village. She was used to living in the brave new world before this culture that was so different. Lenina doesn't understand what she is talking about because she doesn't know she is the director's ex-girlfriend that was suppose to be "lost in the storm."
John somehow got into their room that they were in and started telling them how he should have been the one in the circle. The boy in the circle was being whipped for the sins of the people and this was accepted in this culture as a way to rid themselves of their sin. John feels that they excluded him from being the chosen person because he is too light skinned and he was not conceived by their people, but by the Director and Linda. The culture pictures the boy as an atonement for sins, like the Christian world with Christ. John seems to be very upset that he cannot atone for other sins because he is different than them.
Lenina and Bernard get to the reservation and Lenina instantly doesn't like it. She says it's weird because of the smells, the people were old, and they watched a ceremony where a kid walked around in a circle getting whipped. Lenina started bawling and saying it wasn't right. She turned to soma to calm down and she didn't have any. Soma mediates their happiness so they don't feel extreme emotions and they can forget the pains in their world or the world of another culture. In some instances, it is similar to today because of the people who escape reality by taking drugs.
Bernard headed into the Director's office to get permission to go to the savage reservation. Then, the Director started telling a long story about when he brought a girl to the reservation and she got lost in a storm. He began to tell Bernard that for his independent actions that he was going to send him to Iceland. He didn't like Bernard's actions on not taking soma or wanting to have more of a relationship with someone. Single relationships were prohibited and this world wanted everybody to belong to the group and share many sexual relationships to express that.
when you first meet Bernard he doesn't seem to like there calcher. He doesn't like talking to Lanina in front of ever one. he does not take soma either.
Getting startedthe first part of this story starts. By showing a factory making people. conditioning of people threw negative feed back.
